Prevention!

What is Preventive Dental Care?

Preventive dental care includes all the measures taken to keep your child's teeth and gums healthy and prevent dental problems from developing. This includes regular dental check-ups, dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants. But most importantly, it is all about education. Learning about what actually causes cavities and how prevent their development or progression is the key to avoiding expensive and invasive dental treatment.

Regular Dental Check-Ups

Regular dental check-ups are an essential part of preventive dental care. Your child should visit the dentist every six months for a check-up. It is the same interval as for adult dental care but because kids are always growing and changing, it is all the more important to stay on top of them! During these visits, Dr. Dan will examine your child's teeth and gums, check for any signs of dental problems, and provide advice on how to maintain good oral health. Dr. Dan's favorite thing to say is "see you in 6!" You'll quickly find that Dr. Dan strongly feels that in an ideal world he wouldn't have a job because all kids are healthy!

Dental Cleanings

Dental cleanings are another important part of preventive dental care. During a dental cleaning, we will remove any plaque and tartar buildup from your child's teeth. This helps to prevent cavities and gum disease from developing.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatments are a simple and effective way to prevent tooth decay. Fluoride is a naturally occuring mineral that helps to strengthen tooth enamel and make it more resistant to decay. Will you get a cavity if you do not use fluoride? No. Will you never get a cavity if you do use fluoride? No. Fluoride is just another tool to manage risk of cavities.

Do you remember when you were a kid and had to sit in the dental chair with the tray of bubble gum fluoride foam in your mouth for 30 minutes while you played on a gameboy? No more, fluoride varnish takes 2 seconds to apply, tastes better and is just as effective. Dr. Dan and his staff have tried all sorts of different companies fluoride varnish to find one that tastes good, isn't too sticky and does not burn the gums or lips!

Dr. Dan will never pressure you to utilize fluoride for your child. We justwant you to have all the information you need to make the best decision for your child.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a protective coating that is applied to the chewing surfaces of your child's back teeth. They help to prevent cavities by sealing off the grooves and fissures in the teeth where bacteria can accumulate. By sealing the grooves, it prevents bacteria from harboring in the groove depths where the toothbrush bristles can have a hard time effectively reaching.

Conclusion

Preventive dental care offers many benefits but most importantly it reduces the need for more extensive/expensive dental treatments in the future. By taking your child for regular dental check-ups, dental cleanings, and other preventive measures, you can help to prevent dental problems from developing and ensure that your child's teeth and gums remain healthy.
