What is a Pulpotomy?

As a parent, you might have heard the term 'pulpotomy' AKA ‘baby root canal’ in the context of pediatric dentistry. But what does it really mean? In this blog, we will demystify the term, explaining what a pulpotomy is, why it might be necessary, and what you can expect if your child needs this procedure.

Understanding a Pulpotomy

A pulpotomy, often referred to as a "baby root canal", is a common dental procedure performed on children's primary (baby) teeth. The procedure involves removing the infected portion of the pulp (where the nerve and blood vessels are housed) to prevent further infection into the roots and preserve the natural tooth's structure. The removed infected portion is replaced with biocompatible dental material and medication to prevent re-infection.

So is it a root canal?

No, actually it is almost nothing like a root canal, but in pediatric dentistry, we say ‘baby root canal’ because it is the closest thing that parents may be familiar with. In an adult tooth root canal, the entire pulp (nerves & blood vessels) is removed, not just the infected portion. Then the tooth is filled back up with a completely different medication than in a baby tooth pulpotomy.

It's important to note that while a pulpotomy might sound intimidating, it's a routine procedure performed by pediatric dentists like Dr. Hoang, and is typically painless thanks to modern anesthesia techniques.

Why is a Pulpotomy Necessary?

A pulpotomy is usually necessary when decay or injury reaches the pulp/nerve of the tooth, causing inflammation or infection. If left untreated, this can lead to severe toothache, abscesses, or even loss of the tooth.

By performing a pulpotomy, the dentist can remove the infected pulp, relieving pain and preventing the spread of infection. This procedure can help save the tooth, allowing it to last until it falls out naturally when it's time for the permanent tooth to come in.

What to Expect During a Pulpotomy

The procedure begins with the application of local anesthesia to numb the area. The dentist then removes the decayed portion of the tooth and the infected pulp. After the pulp has been removed, a medicated filling is placed into the tooth to prevent further infection and a crown is placed over the tooth to seal and protect it.

Post-procedure, your child might experience some soreness, but this typically subsides within a few days. Dr. Hoang will provide you with aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

When possible it is preferred to save a tooth with a pulpotomy, even though it is a baby tooth. Preservation of the baby tooth until it is the right time for the adult tooth to come in helps guide the adult tooth in correctly. Preservation also allows your child to maintain their ability to talk, chew and smile. Most importantly, a baby tooth pulpotomy is a much more comfortable procedure than extraction, so your child’s treatment experience is usually improved.

Preventing the Need for a Pulpotomy

The best way to prevent the need for a pulpotomy is through good oral hygiene practices to avoid cavities in general. This includes regular brushing and flossing, limiting sugary foods and drinks, and regular dental check-ups. However, if there is a cavity, getting it addressed when it’s small enough for a filling, or even just a crown, can prevent needing a pulpotomy.

Our team emphasizes preventive care and education to help our young patients maintain healthy smiles. We also provide dental sealants and fluoride treatments as additional preventive measures.

Choosing the Right Pediatric Dentist

Choosing the right dentist for your child's dental needs is crucial. You want someone who is not only skilled and experienced, but also patient, understanding, and able to make your child feel comfortable.

Performing a pulpotomy is a technique-sensitive procedure and doing it meticulously will help prevent failure or re-infection.
